Sandalfoot hosted its annual Valentine’s Day social out by the pool again this year.  The weather cooperated as much as our wonderful guests and all was lovely.  Everyone was generous enough to bring hors d’oeuvre and a favorite beverage.  The incredibly delicious food and great company was matched by the remarkably beautiful view from the poolside setting. This secluded Fort Myers offshoot is considered even more low-key, quiet and quaint than its Gulf Coast neighbor, and that’s saying a lot. Casual is the order of the day on Sanibel Island; a shabby chic vibe permeates the Periwinkle Way galleries, restaurants and shops; seashells cover every sandy and linoleum surface. In fact, the abundant seashells have become this island’s (and its smaller sister, Captiva’s) claim to fame. You’ll find plenty of beachcombers practicing the “Sanibel stoop” — what locals call shelling — on any lengthy stretch of sand. Plan on joining them for at least one afternoon of your stay; that is, if the mood strikes you. The residents of laid-back Sanibel wouldn’t have it any other way.

Things to Keep in Mind:

• Food is a fine art Seafood is all the rage, particularly grouper and stone crabs. For dessert, order something with chocolate pudding fruit, a locally grown fruit that’s filled with a sweet, chocolate-colored pulp.
• There’s a knack to shelling For the best assortment of whelks, conchs and sand dollars, visit the beach an hour before low tide or right after a rain shower. Ask at your hotel’s front desk for a guide to finding the best “catch.”

How To Save Money in Sanibel Island

• Don’t drive to the beach All of Sanibel’s beaches have metered parking. Book a hotel that’s close to your beach of preference, then walk or bike to the shore. (We recommend you stay with us at Sandalfoot Condominium and walk to the beach via our beautiful new walkway!)
• Visit in fall Winter is the standout season on Sanibel, but the best shelling conditions are actually in the cheaper fall months. Pack a sweater and book for October or November.

Sanibel is #1 on Frommer’s List

Everyone at Sandalfoot Condominium loves Sanibel Island and we’re happy our guests do too! We have some exciting news to share with you today – Sanibel Island was picked as the #1 Top Tourist Destination on Arthur Frommer’s List! Sanibel Island is the number one travel destination in the world, according to travel guru Arthur Frommer, the mastermind behind Frommer’s guidebooks and budget travel magazine.

Frommer recently ranked his ten favorite places to visit and listed Sanibel first above destinations like Bali and Paris.

Sanibel Island residents are celebrating the top honors from such a respected travel writer.

The island has won many travel awards and high rankings, but this carries special weight because it is Frommer’s personal favorite.

“I thought it was sort of a hidden treasure for a long time,” said visitor Kay Liebenow.

“Well, it just ensures that I’m going to be able to stay here for the rest of my life and hopefully my children will continue to live here and enjoy one of the most beautiful places on earth,” said Michael Billheimer, owner of Lighthouse Cafe..

The ranking gives Billheimer and others who work on the island a sense of security.

Frommer cites the island’s natural beauty and home for rare birds found at the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

“To be picked number one, to be a part of Sanibel Island, we always knew we were number one but it’s nice to have backing from someone with that much prestige,” said Toni Westland of the refuge.

The Sanibel Chamber of Commerce says in just these first few weeks of season, they’ve already seen a record number of people at their visitor’s center.

According to the Visitors and Convention Bureau, the Southwest Florida region is coming off of record year for tourism tax collections.

Sandcastle on the Beach!

The beach at Sandalfoot Condominium is a wonderful place to be, especially this time of year. The sound of the waves crashing upon the shore is so relaxing and the greatness of the ocean is breathtaking to say the least. It’s such a de-stressing and beautiful place to spend time with family, friends or by yourself. It’s a great place to sit and meditate or just reflect on life. I always feel a sense of gratitude that overwhelms me when I take a walk on the beach because I know how amazing it is to live in paradise!

There are always new things to discover when you’re walking along the shores of Sanibel Island.  Today I’d like to share with you some nice sandcastle creations left behind by some very creative guests. You can actually see Sandalfoot in the background of a few. I’m so happy I came across them on my walk and that I had my camera handy to capture the moment and be able to share it with you here!

Sandalfoot gets New Shuffleboard Court!

At Sandalfoot Condominium we really take pride in our properties and grounds. We’re always looking for ways to improve, renovate, update and create a better experience for our guests!

We’re very happy to announce that our Shuffleboard Court has been completely redone.  We went beyond just a new surface, but replaced the concrete too.  This means a smoother surface to play on and a much longer lasting court.   The surface will soon be given a protective coating and then a fresh layer of paint.  We had to wait for the concrete to cure before finishing the project.  Meanwhile, this temporary playing surface has given our current guests plenty of “fun in the sun.” Did you know that the game was introduced to the United States at Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1913?
